Letters of Recommendation from Clients:

Thank you so much for the prompt and fine editorial work you did on Massacre at Baxter Springs. Your line by line review indicated my weaknesses and proposed clear ways to improve the work. You also were quick to praise when you felt the writing was good. I really appreciated that. You dealt with me honestly and your encouraging remarks helped spur me along to finish. I feel by taking your suggestions, my historical novel has greatly improved. Without you, I might still be mired in ineffectual drafts and not knowing what to do next.

My book, Massacre at Baxter Springs, has now been published. I doubt I would have had any success had I not had your help. I hope to work with you again.

I highly recommend you to anyone who seeks the services of a first-class editor.

Sincerely,
Tom Smith

Arlene Uslander brought my manuscript, EVA MARIE PENNINGTON, to life, not only with her editing, but with her constructive criticism. Her grasp of the storyline and attention to detail is to be highly commended; she took my story, and tweaked it into a novel.

She is fun to work with, and insightful. Arlene gives you a timetable and delivers.

You can count on her. I highly recommend Arlene Uslander as an editor.

Arlene,

I wanted to thank you again for your help on my latest book, The Ghosts of Cotton Row. Do you realize that you started editing for me in 2003? Five books later, I still fell anxious waiting for your edited comments. It is not just the sentence structure editing that keeps me coming back but the way you get involved in each book. You always give that extra personal touch that helps me to identify areas where re-writing is necessary.  It has been a real partnership. I highly recommend your services to anyone who is looking for a professional editor. I am glad that our paths crossed.

I recently engaged Arlene Uslander to edit my latest novel, "Surviving Jardine."  From past experience, I've learned that most editors are quite impersonal, doing the job you hired them for, but with little or no passion.

Arlene, on the other hand, submerges herself into the story and is not afraid to level corrective criticism.  Her changes and corrections were spot on, and I credit her for making, what I think was a good story,  a much better one.

Dear Arlene,

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for all that you have done for
me. As an editor you were an absolute gift to me. The additional fact that
you are an incredible person, and so lovely to work with is a great bonus.
In my book, I make reference to the African proverb "when the student is
ready the teacher shall appear" and once again this rings true in our work
together, as it was by chance that we were introduced, and at the exact, and
perfect juncture. I love how you work, it has been a great learning
experience for me. The way in which you edit and notate so that one can
truly understand gave me the ability to really take onboard not only what you
were editing, but what you were teaching. And that is yet another bonus!

I feel like you are right here with me when I'm working on the manuscript. I love your comments. It's like you're walking me through it. Thank you!

I look forward to working with you again and again, and it is my great
pleasure to recommend you to anyone who needs an editor. As a first time
author, it was very important to me to have someone who could relate to the
material and hear my voice. Your editing was detailed and to the point, while
working with my voice and helping to bring out in me the necessary additions
to complete the work.

I am truly grateful,

I recommend Arlene Uslander as an editor for many reasons. First, she whipped my manuscript into shape, spotting all the poor writing and pesky typos. Second, she gave excellent suggestions along the way, But best of all, I now have a dear friend who has encouraged me to get the book published. I never dreamed that I could feel as though the person who read and edited my manuscript would become a very special friend. I can’t wait to write my first query letter.

Arlene has a real talent for editing. Over the past several years, she had helped me refine my work to the point where I have gotten articles published in major publications. Most recently, she has worked hard with me on my first novel, and I feel that her suggestions in the areas, both of character and plot development, have taught me a great deal. Editing is an absolute necessity for any writer, aspiring or accomplished. I would highly recommend Arlene for either.

Your editorial contribution to the Cornbread children’s book series has been invaluable. I’ve truly seen myself grow as a more proficient writer due to the suggestions you’ve made with my two manuscripts. Thank You so much for the professional editing of my most recent work titled, The Last Dream. This is the fourth manuscript that you have edited for me, and I could not be more pleased with the attention given to my every written word. Arlene,
I want to truly thank you for all that you have done for me. Your work was great and you were a pleasure to work with. Finding a good editor that wasn't trying to rip me off, was a real challenge. Once we began to work together, I knew that I had chosen the right one. Other editors that I had contacted were very impersonal. You were personal and professional, which put me at ease.

I read my manuscript about five times before I sent it to you, and I thought I did a pretty good job of editing it. However, you proved me wrong with the many edits that you made. This journey has definitely been a learning experience. You have been everything that I needed in an editor. As a first time author, this whole process has been scary. However, your work has given me the confidence in knowing that my book, Opposites Do Attract will be successful. I look forward to working with you on my next book, and I would definitely recommend you to other writers!

Arlene,
I feel so lucky to have found you as my editor.  When I sent you my
manuscript, I honestly thought there wasn't much that would need to be done,
but after seeing your edits, I'm just so thankful because the edits and
suggested changes you've made, raised the bar on the level of
professionalism I now have as the author - which of course reflects on the
credibility of the information in my book.

In addition to your incredible skill as an editor - the genuine caring you
showed for me and my project made the whole process so enjoyable.  You
treated me with the exact sensitivity and caring I wanted as a first-time
author and I'm just so grateful you were recommended to me.  Please feel

For me, Arlene Uslander has been the perfect editor. She maintained the delicate balance of high expectations and honest encouragement that kept on track until my novel was transformed from a raw product with some promise into the best it could be. And, at every step, I always had the feeling that my book and helping me was very important to her. I’ve learned an incredible amount by writing from her many e-mails and manuscript corrections and I am very thankful.

Arlene Uslander, Editor Extraordinaire, was professional, accessible and supportive from start to finish while editing my book, 1089 Nights: An Odyssey Through the Middle East, Africa and Asia. More than taking you on as a client, she virtually adopts you. Her services are a labor of love. She spends a lot of  time providing good advice concerning the publishing process.  She takes her mentoring role quite seriously and wants so much for you to succeed.  More than anything else, she has been one of my greatest cheerleaders, which a new author needs more than anything.  Thank you, Arlene, for your kindness to me.  I am forever indebted.

Arlene not only gives you advice, she gives you that second look at something you may have overlooked. She will not rush through your work. She gives every word the full attention it needs. Plus, her rates are amazing! Her time and attention to detail is worth so much more than she charges.

If you choose Arlene for your editing needs, you surely will not disappointed. I
certainly wasn't! In fact, I have just started writing book two in my new series and already have it set to be edited by Arlene when it is finished.

Arlene,

Thank you for editing my book, How Big Are the Pancakes? Three Biker Chicks Cycle Across America! After three attempts at finding an editor, I found YOU.  My perseverance and patience paid off.  You were well worth the wait!  Congratulations on successfully cycling across America with me.  There were many rough and bumpy spots along the way, but your expert eye and red pen helped smooth and straighten out my line-by-line hazards.  As the “Queen of Dialogue,” you took my stale, bland “saids” and “replies” to a new level.  You added pizzazz and helped jump-start my tired text. Your constructive criticism was invaluable and greatly appreciated.  Thank you for helping me put the finishing touches on my manuscript.  It’s been a pleasure working with you.  Well done, Arlene!

I had struggled for a while, to get a reliable and professional editor with favorable rates. When I got to know Arlene Uslander, my writing world changed. She reviewed my manuscript titled “Touching the American Rainbow” in a professional way and guided me through her constructive criticism, to polish the writing and unlock the hidden aspects of interest in my story. While she worked, she always provided timely feedback and was extremely helpful and fair-minded in her editorial comments. It was a great experience working with Arlene because she uplifted my work to meet professional standards in terms of style, format and presentation. Working with Arlene enriched me with better writing skills while I got to know about the common expectations of publishers.

Arlene did a sterling job of sorting out the puzzle of my book, unlocking the hanging issues and highlighting important areas. It was almost as though she was inside my head. I would sincerely recommend Arlene to any aspiring writer who needs reliable guidance in professional editing.

Dear Arlene,

It was “fate” that I found you, indirectly through The Simple Touch of Fate, your own beautiful book. I am convinced it was meant to be that you came into my writing life at the exact time I needed you most. You never told me what to do. You asked those pointed questions that led me to see what I had missed, and I saw a clear direction in which to go.

I had expected those red marks that put commas where they needed to be, and straightened out my grammar. Maybe another editor would have marked some of those, too.. But no one could offer of themselves as you did, in such a personal and encouraging way. I call you the “The Editor Who Went That Extra Mile.”

I recommend you wholeheartedly, not only as a most capable editor, but as an involved and caring person.

September 6, 2006

On a windy day in the Summer of 2006, I sent a complete stranger a check and a copy of my manuscript, Nomad's Land, that had no page numbers and lots of things underlined instead of using italics.  All I thought I would receive was a spell check and touchup on the comma usage.

What I got in return was pure magic.

You never know what will come back from the editor.  Sometimes they love it and sometimes they don't.  Either way, red marks are going to be found hiding in a corner or peering from behind a tree.  Mine was filled with red--and each mark made sense--each suggestion made me pause and take another look at a sentence that now read better or fit into a paragraph in a way I never would have considered.

If you are looking for an editor--whether you are a newbie or a novelist--I would recommend Arlene.

She took my lump of coal from trembling hands and gave me back a polished diamond.

I highly recommend.  Ms. Arlene Uslander as an editor. She works in a timely and well-organized fashion.  She is a master and a genius at her chosen craft of editing. She knows exactly how to polish up a piece of writing to make is shine with perfect grammatically correct sentences.  She will revive your tired old sentences with some "get up and go" without sacrificing your original meaning or style.  She improved my manuscript by making it more clear and easy to read.  She encouraged me when I needed to be, and did not hesitate to gently correct me when I was wrong.  She guided me through the editing process like the professional that she is.  So with the editing of Arlene Uslander, I guarantee you will be extremely well pleased.

Arlene, thank you. You are awesome. I have been an educator now for thirty years and have coached some of the nation’s top academic teams. I know what excellence is, and you are it. When I contacted you, I simply expected to have my book edited like a simple wash and wax. Instead, it got detailed. Your attention to the content, grammar, and structure took a chunk of coal and polished it into a diamond. Arlene, you are truly one in a million. Your devotion to excellence was not limited to the text of the book, but went far beyond. Your inspiration and encouragement took my dream, infused it with enthusiasm, and helped me turn it into a reality. Thank you for being you.

Arlene Uslander is amazing. Her intelligence, talent and insight are second to none. Before choosing an editor for my novel, Longinus: Book I of The Merlin Factor, I contacted several editors. She was not only the most professional, but the most respectful. She displayed an understanding and sensitivity for my work that not many had.  Her suggestions for structural changes always maintained the stylistic integrity of my work, and never imposed something different. I will certainly be tapping her for my future writing projects. She is my editor. Thank you Arlene!

Dear Arlene,

You were a godsend!
You have been very conscientious about editing my novel without altering my writing style; you were adamant about this. You made me rewrite the first two chapters, and afterwards, I was glad that you insisted because you were right! You were insightful and inquisitive, asking questions, thereby saving me from the small but awkward mistakes. You paid attention!

I contacted several "book Doctors"  through Writer's Digest and was
disappointed by the impersonal replies I received. Then I found Arlene
and the rest, as they say, is history. She not only became my editor but also

For the next eighteen months we worked together on my YA novel, "Aggie of Raven's Lair," until it was the polished, fast paced story I had dreamed about.  Arlene has the knack of  making you feel your book is the most important project she is working on. I highly recommend her editing skills and most of all her honest (yet gentle) suggestions for improvement.

Arlene,

I find your reactions and judgments on what I have left out, the characters, the plot flaws so helpful. You are very gifted at identifying glitches, holes and dissonances in the plots and characters--a rarer gift than grammatical editing, which you also do to perfection. I have been working with editors for 22 years. I am a newspaper reporter in Ventura County, California. I know the difference between an editor and a book editor -- Ms. Uslander is a book editor. As an unpublished writer, I brought my first novel to Arlene for her objective view of the story.  I wanted comment on the flow of the story, the development of characters, and overall quality of my writing.  I did not bring it to Arlene until I was ready for a critical evaluation and I got what I expected.  Her comments were numerous, and her questions were sensible.  Some of her suggestions inspired me to add sections, some led to major rewriting.  She offered frank critique, she turned it around quickly, and it's fair to say that the book is much better now because of her careful attention to detail.

Thank you for helping me to develop my novel, The Crying of the Wind. Your suggestions helped me to strengthen the plot and create a more believable story. I especially want to thank you for recommending additional denouement chapters. At first, I was reluctant to add new material, but now that the book is completed I am fully convinced that the new chapters substantially improved the storu. It’s obvious that you know exactly what you’re doing. You have a sharp eye for details that affect character and plot development, and your technical editing is terrific.

Moreover, it was a pleasure working with a true professional. I doubt that other editors are as readily available to discuss their comments. Thanks to your guidance, I believe that my novel is now the best that it can be.

Sincerely,

I have been very pleased with all the work that Arlene has done for me. I have used her services several times and find her editing always sharp with her detailed critiques making all of her points very clear. She often pointed out things that I would not have discovered on my own, and she reviewed the manuscript, not only as an editor but also as a reader----which is also very helpful. I found her unique in that she not only focuses on technical structure in a professional, responsive and thoughtful way, but also on the substance of the story, which certainly was very encouraging in my writings.

Arlene is the best! She’s thoughtful, insightful, punctilious and careful—seeing both the forest and its many species of trees. And she really cares about her authors and their work. When she takes on a project she will work on it night and day until it is done. After that she will continue to tweak it until it is as close to perfect as the laws of God and nature will permit.

Arlene,

Thank you so much for everything! Without you I never could have shaped my story into the novel it has become. You are a patient, experienced professional who made sure every last detail was attended to. I am about to begin my second novel and wouldn't dream of sending it anywhere else for editing. If I am fortunate enough to get published, it will be, in large measure, because of your hard work. Again, thank you and I look forward to working with you in the future.

I want to thank you for your comments, encouragement and editing. You are so patient with my habitual mistakes and so good at what you do- especially understanding what it is that I'm trying to say.

Arlene,

Thank you! That sounds like weak praise, but if I bold, capitalize, and italicize it, as my editor you would point out the error of my ways.

As I said several times during the editing process, you are a treasure of knowledge and wisdom. I didn't know what to expect from a freelance editor when I sent SHADOW OF GOLD to you, but whatever it was, I certainly received far more than I imagined. The line-by-line editing was superb, of course, but your help went far beyond that. The questions you raised about the plot and characters, and your suggestions about improving them, were, alone, worth more than your fee. Your moral support, thoughtfulness, and encouragement were invaluable.

Once again, thank you. I am pleased that you permitted me to include you in the Acknowledgements section of my book, and I will certainly enjoy working with you when I write my second novel. In the interim, I happily recommend your services to anyone needing a very professional editor.

Arlene,

My book should be going to print by the end of the month. The cover is being designed this week. In the acknowledgement section, I wrote the following: I wish to thank Arlene Uslander for her careful and enthusiastic editing of my manuscript.

By the way, I hired a firm to write the back cover copy. When the cover writer read the book, he commented to me on the outstanding job that had been done editing it. I gave him your name, phone number and email address at his request. He said they sometimes have the need to out-source editing work.

Dear Arlene

My manuscript, "Benevolent Takeover," is finally complete and I'm now in the process of submitting query letters and synopses' to agents and publishers.I never thought I'd get this far, and without question, I wouldn't have without your invaluable contributions. You not only corrected my atrocious spelling and punctuation, but patiently and correctly suggested that I re-think some verbiage and shorten and re-write a few of the chapters. You are just what I needed to complete the project. I cannot thank you enough.
I'm looking forward to working with you again in the future.

Kindest regards,

I visited the web sites of several editors, searching for one who would cause me to believe I was making a wise investment. That journey led me to Arlene's web site, which demonstrated that she had the credentials to do a superior job at reasonable rates. After a few E-mail interactions with her, I obtained the warm feeling I needed to hire her as my editor.

Working with Arlene has been like having a close friend sit next to me at my computer, and teach and guide me in my writing. Sometimes, I have to remind myself that I would not be able to recognize her face in passing, or know her voice on the telephone. The editing experience has been more valuable than I could have imagined, , both professionally and personally. I look forward to working with her on my second manuscript.

Dear Arlene,

I wanted to take a minute to thank you for your superior editing skills. Your service included much more than simple line-editing (although you were great at that!) but you insight, honesty, and ability to support my style and message was very much appreciated.

You're a great editor and I look forward to working with you on the next project, which, by the way, is right around the bend!

Best,

Arlene:

I wanted to take a moment and express my appreciation for the work you did on production of my manuscript, When Cotton Was King. This was my first attempt at self-publishing and I was in need not only of structure but also in the process itself. Your help and knowledge of all the components of publishing, made me feel more at ease in my endeavor. Your suggestions, kindness, and attention to detail will long be appreciated. I would certainly recommend your talents to anyone who is considering a qualified editor. It was a pleasure working with you and I will be calling on you again in the future.

Dear Arlene,

I am very pleased with the result of your editing of my manuscript, Tears For Grandma. You did an excellent job with the line-by-line editing, and I found your suggestions about the characters extremely beneficial. The extras you provided regarding publishing and public relations was greatly appreciated, too.

If I write other books, and I hope to do so, I plan to request your editing services. It's a pleasure to know and work with you.

Two of my novels have been published. Arlene Uslander just finished editing my third manuscript. Of my three novels, Mrs. Uslander's work was, by far, the best-- the most professional editing I have received. I will be using Mrs. Uslander as my editor from now on.

Dear Arlene,

You are incredible! I sent out several requests for information. I received mostly the standard copied letter that everyone received. It was so impersonal, and I didn't like that. It was so different with you, and that was my first indication that you were a go. Seriously, that was the tip of the iceberg. You are so talented. You communicate, and I got exactly what you said I would and then some. My writing partner and I had no idea where to start on this project, and you really have been a God send. I am so happy we went with you. I could see from your other references that everyone seems to feel as we do.

I want to thank you for your recent editing of my manuscript, FONTANA. I sincerely appreciate all the work and thought you put into this project. Should other authors cross my path who require editing assistance, I will recommend you without reservation. Your work was timely, efficient and very thorough. In fact, as you know, I had problems keeping up with your pace! You obviously put significant mental energy into your editing, and it shows. I am convinced that my manuscript has been meaningfully enhanced by your efforts and I am confident that your contribution to 'FONTANA' will have a very positive influence on its publication. You did not just meet my expectations, you exceeded them. Lastly, Arlene, I want to note what an absolute pleasure it has been to work with you on this endeavor. You are a thoughtful, kind professional, and I personally appreciated your involvement in my manuscript. When I get it published, there will certainly be a place in the forward to 'Fontana' for recognizing your important contribution. And I expect your help with the sequel, whatever its title may be! Again, Arlene, thanks so much for your help.

Hi Arlene,

Thanks for emailing. I appreciate what you've said. I will follow your advice and allow the publisher to make corrections. If, in the future, I need an editor, you're the first I will think of! I appreciate your honesty more than I can say. It means a lot -- especially in a time when many people are looking to make money at any cost to others. You are definitely a cut above the rest. Again, Arlene, many thanks.

Best, Gena
